Atlanta Transportation

Atlanta is a great city with beautiful people, amazing tech facilities, innovative learning environments, and traffic ranked amongst the worst in the world. I submit for your consideration, a possible solution.

The Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA)

What is MARTA?

MARTA is Atlanta's rapid transit system, consisting of railways, buses, and shuttles. With the ability to connect Atlanta's most popular businesses, events, and popular local locations - you would think this system would reduces traffic.

  • MARTA has over 29 station locations throughout the city of Atlanta.

  • MARTA runs during major activity hours, and on weekends.

  • MARTA has a mobile app that tells times, disturbances, routes, and contact information to HQ.

  • MARTA wants to improve services to help transportion options and reduce traffic in Atlanta. (Well help, hopefully)

Our Challenge

Use IoT to help MARTA riders find points of interest around stations and help them navigate through our stations and get to their final destinations after they disembark the trains.

Overarching goals

  1. Increase ridership on the MARTA.

  2. Increase the experience of MARTA riders and improve utility.

1st Hurdle - Content Heavy

Content Questions:

What are the content types we are working with?

How frequently does the content need to update?

Can we leverage the metadata content?

What would users expect to find when opening this application?

How clear can we be in answering those expectations?

Content We need:

Station details

Names, Trains, Buses, Restrooms, Times, Services, Station Population, Station Activity

Train Details

Frequency, Passenger count, Time, Service Line

Events Near Stations

Festivals, Meetups, Concerts, Performances, Sports Events

Points of Interest

Local popular locations

Content Solution:

  • Leverage the MARTA metadata on train station activity and passenger count with event location, times, and dates to suggest popular points of interest accessible using MARTA .

  • Develop our content strategy to encourage riders with curated information about events, points of interest, and station activity to use MARTA transportation.

2nd Hurdle - Prompt Interaction

Interaction Question

How do we show users the most active station and prompt them to engage with the Interface?

Interaction Solution

We opted for a data influenced visual cue to display an active highlight that draws user attention to the most populated station, paired with closest event. This helped solved the problem for users unaware of activities happening they could access by MARTA, and gain information about how many people may be in that area.

3rd Hurdle - Present a Strong Story
