Toastmaster Table Topics
310 North Toastmasters
Theme: “Where Did Winter Go”
This is where it begins.
My first Toastmasters meeting that is - the beginning of elevating the employee speech journey.
I must say, I started it off on the right foot.
The Tabletopic Experience
So to start a Toastmasters meeting, they have this ceremony of Table topics.
This is where a designated member ask impromptu questions for lucky and eager members to share their responses. “Rise quickly to your feet, speak fluent and keep it between 60 to 90 secs please.
Go!
I decided to take advantage, and volunteer to go first. No way to win without trying. Plus, breaking the ice sooner will get you warmer faster. I raised my hand, and Sir John L, called me to the front of the room.
By this point in my life I am not nervous of the crowd, more apprehensive on how WELL I can perform for the first shot. Building presentation and communication skills has been forward in my mind for a long time now, so I am at the point of shaping and toning, not just acquiring.
“Where did your taxes go? Let’s say, you Bilal have, a large amount of undisclosed money and you were going to blow money on one thing, what would it be?”
I proceed into the story about my auntie and the lack of tax dollars my family seemed to receive every year after she completed them for us. So where our taxes are went every year was a valid question. From there I explained the Island I would purchase to start my own empire from scratch. The story needed some ambition. It was a good spew, and great way to break the ice.
The meeting overall was an amazing first time experience. The people are honestly warm and welcoming. Encouraging and supportive and honestly, wildly hilarious or colorful. I will be attending more meetings and moving up the ladder, hopefully I will start my speeches soon. There will be more to come.
The main reason I wrote this is, I WON! First day, I won Best Table Topics! My little speech was interesting and a great way to get my ball rolling.
